I came across this article in China's official Xinhuanews agency. It's filled with statistics on how Chinese overseas students are making significant contribution to the tanked economies of the Western world.
In the US for example, around 100,000 Chinese students spend on average, 150,000-250,000 RMB per year in the host country (tuition+living expense). That's a conservative estimate of around 150 to 250 billion RMB, or 3 to 4 billion USD of income!
Countries that receive the most are in order: Australia, US and UK (150 billion Australian Dollar of income for that country!!).
Most impressive is the fact that many of these countries, including the US, have changed student VISA/immigration laws - reflecting the reality of how much greenback each Chinese student brings. Apparently, college presidents have lobbied the Congress for years to ease student visa restrictions - and finally the government acceded this year. Canada has also lifted a ban on international students working for the first semester. Now more and more students are working and subsequently gaining permanent residency status. Australia has lowered the language requirement for entrance into Universities to attract more Chinese students. To my knowledge, US still requires both the TOEFEL and the SAT in most cases, while in Australia only requires one English test. And that's one reason why Australia has more Chinese students, despite having much less universities than the US.
China sends over 200,000 students a year - over 15% of the world's total, and is also the most fast growing group. Who can imagine that when China continues to get richer, when hundreds of millions of rural/migrant workers join the middle class rank, how many millions more Chinese international students will be floating around, colonizing the rest of the world?
All of that is also generating a huge backlash in host countries - especially in Australia. Apparently there is this facebook group calling for the expulsion of non-English speaking students from Australia. The racial hatred is sending chills to students' backbones. A spate of hate crimes and other violence is also flaring up....The mainstream media does not seem to pick these news up. You only find them in Overseas Chinese community blogs...
